Companies Creating Meaningful Impact

Sunday Roast’s main goal is simple: help do-gooders make a difference in the world.

We are always looking for companies that are creating meaningful impact in their community or even meaningful impact across the world. Below is a list of organizations that are doing amazing stuff that we believe deserve a spotlight!

We are starting our Meaningful Impact list with a bang. Whether the change they want to see is having diversity book clubs or addressing climate injustice and fighting environmental racism. Iconic campaigns they have run include; Jeans for Teens, Voter Registration and GTFO: Get The Filter Out.  Do Something is making waves and proving that you don’t need to be an adult to make meaningful change.

Ben and Jerry’s

Website: https://www.benjerry.com/
Industry: Ice Cream Manufacturer
Location: South Burlington, Vermont
CEO: Matthew McCarthy
Company Size: 1k+ employees
Socials: Instagram: @benandjerrys_ca

Next on our list of do-gooders is a household name, Ben & Jerry’s. You might have heard of them thanks to their 100’s of delicious gourmet ice cream flavours, but we have selected them because of their activism! Their beliefs go beyond ice cream. They have progressive values such as producing their products in an environmentally sustainable way, ensuring that they are lifting up the small communities they work with, and that their employees have the opportunity to provide for their own needs and contribute to society.  Ben & Jerry’s are do-gooders within their company but also help others that aren't connected to them. Other causes that they support are: Voting rights, racial issues, LGBTQ+ rights, climate justice and campaign finance reform.

“We believe that ice cream can save the world”

Keynvor Candle Co

Website: https://keynvor.co.uk/about-us/
Industry: Candle Company
Location: Cornwall, England
CEO: Brad Reynolds
Company Size : 2+ employees
Socials: Instagram: @keynvor

Keynvor is more than just any candle company. They made it on our Do-Gooders list because they are a plastic free, planting tree candle company (try saying that 10 times fast). Nature is their inspiration in every element of the company, from their logo to their packaging to their fully natural and sustainable plant based waxes. Even though their carbon footprint is very small, they have partnered up with MoreTrees.co (also a super great company!). MoreTrees.co is a company that plants trees for others, to help sequester carbon dioxide in the future. With every Treehouse scented candle sold via their website, some of the proceeds go to MoreTrees.co to plant trees. Where are these trees you might ask — impoverished communities around the world to restore healthy forests and reduce extreme poverty.  Now that is something to feel good about!

We were able to chat with Brad briefly, and here are some highlights:

How are your products made and where are the ingredients sourced from?
All Keynvor products are made in my cozy workshop in Newquay. Sourcing ingredients… hmm, now this is a tricky one because I only use what I believe to be the absolute best quality ingredients available. The majority of the ingredients and packaging are made in Europe & UK, but our wax currently comes from overseas. It is incredible and completely natural, so there is a good reason for it, however, I’m constantly searching for European or UK suppliers that can offer the same quality.

Eventually, every ingredient and every material used will be sourced close to home to reduce air/sea miles as much as possible and further minimize our carbon footprint.

What have been the biggest challenges/achievements, or your favorite story on your journey so far?
We are plastic-free! Now, this is not as easy as it seems. To ensure we don’t use any plastic, I had to get a little creative about how the products are made. Our lids, for example, are custom made in Newquay then assembled in the workshop. It would be a lot easier to go and source pre-made candle jar lids with silicone seals etc, but then we wouldn’t be original and we would be adding to the plastic problem. I see it as my responsibility as a business owner to care about how my work will impact the environment, and work in a way that will benefit myself, my customers, and the earth.

What's next / any exciting plans?
I’m glad you asked! Right now I’m expanding our fragrance portfolio and have a few new knockout candles coming soon as well as subscription boxes and developing a couple of new products that are in the pipeline, but you will have to wait and see.

Akin Clothing

Website: https://www.akinclothing.com/
Industry: Clothing Company
Location: Sheffield England
CEO: Ben Howells
Company Size: 10+ employees
Socials: Instagram: @akinclothing

You might recognize Akin from our website! We worked with Akin to create a clean ecommerce aesthetic that doesn’t distract from their amazing mission. 100% of their profits go to providing school uniforms for children in the developing world. Their main goal is to help as many children go to school as possible. That means ensuring that they have a uniform and necessary school supplies. Always going a step further, the school uniforms are always sourced from the community in which the children live, and a community service project (like planting trees or similar) is performed by the children as part of the education process.

So far Akin has helped thousands of children across 15 countries get an education!

Akin also works with artists from all over the world to create stylish street style artwork. The artists have the opportunity to create original artwork for Akin’s shirts and sweaters. The combination of stunning artwork, 100% not for profit and helping children get an education equals to an amazing do-gooder in our books.

Who Gives A Crap

Website: https://ca.whogivesacrap.org/collections/all
Industry: Toilet Paper Company
Location: Melbourne, Victoria
CEO: Simon Griffiths
Company Size: 200+ employees
Socials: Instagram: @whogivesacraptp

Last, but not least on our list of do-gooders, Who Gives A Crap. WGAP creates environmentally friendly toilet paper and paper towels. This company really gives a crap about the environment and impoverished communities around the world. Their products are 100% plastic free, they don't use any inks, dyes or scents and they scored a 108.9 on the Impact Score (average companies only score about a 50.9). If that wasn’t good enough, WGAC donates 50% of all profits to help build toilets and to ensure everyone has access to safe water. As of March 2022 they have donated $10M to ensure every household, school, and health clinic has access to WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) and that the local government has the capacity to maintain these services. Who Gives a Crap? These guys. That’s why they made our ‘do-gooders’ list.
